How to Enable 2FA (2-Step Verification) on Your Google Workspace Account

How to Enable 2FA (2-Step Verification) on Your Google Workspace Account

Passwords alone aren’t enough anymore. A single phishing email, reused password, or data breach can expose your entire business.

That’s where 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) – called 2-Step Verification (2SV) in Google – comes in. It adds a second check (like a code on your phone) when you sign in, making it much harder for attackers to get in, even if they know your password.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through, step-by-step, how to enable 2FA on your Google Workspace account.

Step 1 – Open Your Google Account Security Page

  1. In your browser, go to: https://myaccount.google.com

  2. Make sure you’re signed in with your work (Google Workspace) account, not a personal Gmail.

  3. On the left-hand menu, click “Security”

Step 2 – Find 2-Step Verification

  1. Scroll down to the section “How you sign in to Google.”

  2. Look for “2-Step Verification” (or “2-Step Verification – Off”).

  3. Click “2-Step Verification.”

Step 3 – Start the 2-Step Verification Setup

Google will show you an overview screen explaining what 2-Step Verification is.

  1. Click “Get Started” or “Turn on 2-Step Verification.”

  2. You’ll be prompted to sign in again with your password for security.

Step 4 – Choose Your First Verification Method

Google will walk you through adding your first second-step method. Depending on your setup, you may see:

Option A: Google Prompts (Recommended)

If you have an Android phone or the Gmail / Google app installed on iPhone, Google will typically suggest phone prompts first.Google Support+1

  • You’ll see a screen showing a phone associated with your account.

  • Google will send a “Yes / No” sign-in prompt to that device.

  1. Make sure the right phone is listed.

  2. Click “Continue”.

  3. On your phone, tap “Yes” to approve the sign-in.

Option B: Text Message or Phone Call Codes

If prompts aren’t available, Google may ask for a phone number for SMS or voice call codes.

  1. Choose your country and enter your mobile number.

  2. Select whether you want to receive codes by:

    • Text message or

    • Phone call

  3. Click “Next.”

  4. You’ll receive a 6-digit code on your phone.

  5. Enter the code on screen and click “Next” to verify.

Step 5 – Turn On 2-Step Verification

Once your first method is confirmed, Google will show a confirmation screen.

  1. Review the details.

  2. Click “Turn On” to enable 2-Step Verification for your account.

At this point, 2FA/2SV is active on your Google Workspace account.
